The capital of the Basque country in Spain, this beautiful city has worked hard to strengthen its walkable, urban core, a strolling culture (half the trips in the city are made by foot), as well as tremendous access to nature and countryside. It is perhaps best known for its Green Belt that encircles the city and includes the Salburua, an internationally important restored wetland (and formerly the location of the city’s municipal airport). This year Vitoria has been named the EU’s Green Capital City, a prestigious and competitive award demonstrating the city’s commitment to sustainability. The city is not resting on its laurels, however. A newly elected mayor has pushed the city to think of new ways to bring nature into the heart of the city—what they are calling the Anilla Verde Interior—“the interior green belt”!
